I got a really scary phone call at work. Yanique called me and said that she had been in an accident while driving the kids to the library. I could feel my heart jump into overdrive, but luckily the kids were not hurt or even shaken up.
Apparently someone had swerved in front of her on the way to the Westbury library, and she had bumped right into them. Both cars were going pretty slow, so no one in the car had gotten hurt, but the guy in front was claiming a shoulder injury from the accident. So, he was calling the cops as we were speaking.
I went to get them, and Dan jumped on the next train from the city back home. Things could have been a lot lot worse, so fortunately (I guess) the only real casualty was the car. And fortunately (I guess), it was our old VW that was on its last legs anyway. It shouldn't have been our car at all, but earlier that morning Dan and I had noticed that Yanique's car had a flat, so we offered her ours. Sigh...totally totaled. It was actually driveable, but cost more to repair so we had to say our goodbyes in the autobody shop.
Update: it seems that despite Yanique being the driver, the other driver's medical claim gets placed against the owners of the car involved in the accident - i.e. us. So, it took about 8 months, but the insurance claim was finally settled for the maximum covered by the policy - about $100,000! Yikes. Fortumately (I guess), we didn't have to pay anything out of pocket, but our insurance bill DOUBLED, despite only having one remaining car. Double sigh.
