COVID Crafts

Rocketship

I made some paper mache using tissue paper and elmers glue (~1:1 ratio of Elmers to water). I decided against a flour/water paste since I wanted the end product to let as much light through as possible.  I blew up some balloons and added about 6 layers of tissue paper to make - wait for it - balloon shapes, making sure that each layer was dry before adding the next. The next day I took out the rubber balloons and cut the paper mache balloons to fit together as a trio.  This was probably the hardest part because they didn't want to stay put, but eventually I got them stapled them together from the inside.

Dan helped me screw a T shaped block into the wall, which was enough to hold the trio of paper mache balloons.  I rested it on the block and stuffed some twinkle lights behind it.  Voila!

The Enchanted Wood and The Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton was a real favorite with my sister and I when we were younger.  It is a story about three kids who stumble upon a magical wood where the trees whisper and one very special tree - the Faraway Tree grows different things on all its branches, and has a slide called the slippery-slip right in the middle of the trunk. It is so huge and tall that it reaches up, past the clouds, and into wondrous land, like the Land of Birthdays and the Land of Goodies, but also some nasty ones like the Land of Giants.

Kudos to Dy for drawing all the figures! This project would have looked absolutely ridiculous with stick figures. :)

Lots of creatures live in the Faraway Tree as well, like Silky the fairy, the Angry Pixie, Mr. Watsizname, Saucepan Man, Moonface, Dame Washalot, and the owl.

Happily, our kids love the series as well so Dy and I made a huge wall decal for the playroom (Pandemic Project, yeah!) on Contact Paper. See if you can find all these different things!
